Security Risk Management Training
Safety and Security management is central to the successful co-ordination and implementation of humanitarian and international development programmes. It is therefore vital that staff with security risk management responsibilities are supported with high quality, up-to-date Security Risk Management training, and the necessary tools to perform their role fully and to the best of their ability.
Online Security Risk Management Training introduces staff members of national and international organisations to the most recent and relevant safety and security best practices, organisational approaches, methods, and tools. The course is designed to develop the Security Risk Management capacities of individuals and organisation, in order to enhance the safety and security of their field personnel and programmes. It is offered in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
A web-based, instructor-led training, this course is delivered over an 8-week period, combining individual assignments, group work, discussion forums, and live interaction with ILS facilitators. It is designed and developed for persons with current or upcoming Security Risk Management responsibilities, including Security Focal Points working in field offices.
Crisis Management Workshop
The ability to effectively manage a crisis or a critical incident is central to any organisation’s duty of care. Having the required processes, systems, and people in place is a critical component in any organisation’s safety and security thinking (and beyond!), and a benchmark in establishing responsible employment practices.
The Online Crisis Management Workshop is an interactive, simulation-based learning experience that utilises a range of multimedia formats. Examining the psychological needs and pressures placed upon the crisis managers, those directly affected by the incident(s), their families and other colleagues during times of crisis, the workshop tests systems and reinforces the critical skills required to be a successful crisis management team member.
Each programme is written specifically for the commissioning agency, focussing on their programmes, existing crisis / critical incident management processes, and guidelines. The workshop includes a pre-simulation session to familiarise participants, followed by an intensive simulation on a separate day. The workshop concludes with a Debriefing and After-Action Review on a separate day. This training is for Crisis Managers at all levels, potentially including: Senior Leadership Teams, Human Resource Professionals, Communications Professionals, Crisis Administrators and Security Focal Points.
Travel Safety & Security
Travelling for work can be gratifying but it can also be challenging. Staff who travel overseas may find themselves in unfamiliar environments and situations, and subject to increased or differing risks and threats to those which they are accustomed to.
For 10 years, ILS has been empowering travellers to undertake their work in safety, confidence, and good health, through face-to-face Travel Safety and Security Workshops. Now available online, this short, engaging course is delivered in 90-minute sessions over 4 days.
The programme enhances participants’ capacity to analyse, plan, and prepare for safety and security threats when working abroad. The overarching goal is to increase confidence and enable participants and their organisations to fulfil their mandates more effectively.
An ILS facilitator will accompany the participants through an interactive journey, encountering a range of theoretical and practical challenges along the way. From situational awareness through to aggression, via travel health, accommodation safety, and road traffic accidents - this multimedia workshop is key to promoting a culture of safety and security among travelling staff.
The programme is recommended to anyone that travels overseas for work, including both seasoned travellers and those less experienced.
Mental Health & Resilience Training
Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or other sources of significant stress; it’s our ability to ‘bounce back’ in response to challenges and setbacks.
Resilience is a vital component of our mental health, and, therefore, of our safety and security. Our brains and bodies are less able to deal with complexity, to be aware of threats around us, or to take appropriate action to mitigate the impact of risk when we are under too much pressure.
Like building a muscle, increasing resilience takes time and intentionality. Focusing on five core components — connection, wellness, healthy thinking, emotional agility and meaning — this 4-week course will empower participants to withstand, and learn from, difficult and traumatic experiences. The training will increase individuals’ capacity for resilience to weather, and grow from, the difficulties and challenges of operating in the aid and development community.
Mental Health and Resilience Training is suitable for all staff. Although it is not a substitute for specialist support, it is trauma-sensitive and provides practical tools and skills for all those dealing with uncertainty, stress, and deployment in complex environments.
This web-based training is delivered over 4 weeks through a combination of individual assignments and exercises, peer support and learning, and interaction with an ILS facilitator who specialises in stress management and resilience.
